Gozo's Culture

Gozo has two main theatres: the Astra and the Aurora, both in Victoria. Both produce an opera each year and bring over foreign singers to sing with local artists. They also stage dramas, classical music events and ballet. Some plays are in English.

Art has flourished in Gozo because of its religious connection. Gozo has some sacred art treasures by unparalleled masters like Mattia Preti and Paladini, Francesco Zahra, Salvatore and Clemente Busuttil, Giuseppe Cali, Stefano Erardi, Pierre Guillemin and others.

Architecture on the island takes different forms, the most dominant being the baroque style, widely used in the flamboyant churches, and the sixteenth and seventeenth century fortifications and towers erected all over the island.

Gozo boasts a diversity of crafts. It is famous for the lace produced by women who can still be seen at their work on their doorsteps during the milder months of the year. With intricate twists of silver and gold threads, jewellers produce beautiful objects of filigree.

Weaving, stonemasonry, pottery and glassblowing also have a fine tradition on the island of Gozo.
